His gift, holding Springfield together for 27 years while working well with all facets of the community, allowed the church to leave its distinguished legacy. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and generally regarded as the oldest black church in America, Springfield is where the Georgia Republican Party began, where the first Sunday School for blacks began in 1859, and where prestigious Morehouse College was founded, 1867.
