Excerpt: The square between Rådhusgata and Øvre Slottsgate was named in 1958, and occupies part of the old square in Christian IV's city. It had normal square functions, such as water supply and the buying and selling of goods. The gallows were also on the square, and executions were carried out here. The annual market in Christiania was held here from the 1640s until the town square was moved to Stortorvet in 1736.(Submitted on July 2, 2023, by Andrew Ruppenstein of Lamorinda, California.)
By the square was the city's town hall and Holy Trinity Church, the latter destroyed by the town fire in 1686. In 1878, a new church, the Johannes church, was built here by G. A. Bull in the neo-Gothic style. This was heavily damaged early on and was closed down and demolished in 1927. Later, a petrol station was built on the site. In the 1990s, the square was rehabilitated. Central to the square is Wenche Gulbrandsen's sculpture "Christian IV's glove".
