Excerpt (in translation): Herman Alexander Kopp came to Christiania (the old name for Oslo) as a 19-year-old in 1839 and began work at merchant Hans Ihle's wine and spirits shop. Eventually he established his own business in Stortorvet 2, a property bought by wigmaker Peder Hans Vogt. In 1879, the building was demolished to be replaced by the current building.

The structure's three facades have powerful pilasters and solid cornices. Niches with columns and gables mark the axes of the facade at the corners. The short facade facing Kirkegaten and Kirkeristen is made by a central trisalit

The bookseller Jacob Dybwad already had a shop in Stortorvet 2 in 1852 and continued as a tenant in the new building until it was restored in 1986. The building was owned by the Kopp family until the end of the 1980s.
