Hotel Traiano
The hotel Traiano, once hotel Laurati, is located in one of the most fascinating spots in Rome: an area where past and present wonderfully blend conveying an image of the city rich history. The building is flanked by via delle Tre Cannelle, named after a fountain (nowadays demolished), built at the end of the 16th century on a project of Giacomo della Porta. The area went through a deep building and urban renovation beginning from the last period of the 19th century, in relation to the opening of via Nazionale, to the arrangement of the Mercati di Traiano and to the realization of via dei Fori Imperiali. This was made in order to connect the papal, Renaissance and Baroque city with the high districts of the Viminale and the Esquilino. Rome was endowed with structures and infrastructures essential to the new function of Capital of the New Unitary State (1870), according to a project that was carried out during the fascist period. The area surrounding the hotel is rich of elements that had become in time the true paradigm of the "Urbe": the Colonna and the Mercati di Traiano stand particularly out. The hotel is named after the glorious name of the Mercati di Traiano. The building stands opposite to an archaeological area conceived as a real open-air museum, which today is a very frequented place with many cultural demonstrations, and from its rooms it is possible to enjoy the view of all this, admiring the stunning Colonna Traiana (re-established at the end of the 16th century by Pope Sisto V, with a statue of St. Peter on its summit) visual fulcrum of the demonstration. The hotel was built at the end of the 19th century on a project of Pietro Carnevale (1839-1895), also author of the impressive neo-15th century loggias overlooking palazzetto Rubboli (1886), nearby the medieval tower of the Colonna. Carnevale belonged to a group of architects and engineers that astride the two centuries changed the aspect of the modern city: a common element was the application of a refined style, mainly destined to the bourgeois class and characterised by elements drawn from the refined 16th century tradition. On building the hotel the architect remained faithful to the plain and monumental style of the Roman buildings of the late 19th century, nevertheless reserving a particular care to the details of the façade: the ashlars on ground floor and the sequence of arcades overhung by three rows of elegantly framed windows. Its propensity for the exact copy of the sixteenth-century models culminates in the construction of the area reserved to the nobility, enlivened by aerial and harmonical balustrades and by two symmetrical niches with classical styled statues. An analogous harmony characterizes the ashlar decoration on the corners, enlivened by a balcony overhung by a noble coat of arms. Inside, through an atrium with granite columns and paved with precious marbles, it is possible to reach the beautiful living room with a panelled ceiling and the walls adorned by a valuable stuccoed decoration. After various restorations the hotel has entered a prestigious hotel society, whose prerogative is to realize prestigious hotels in historical buildings of cultural and artistic merit and to welcome an exclusive international clientele.
