Union Church
Union Center for the Arts
The Union Church, built in 1922, has great historic significance as the first Christian church built in Little Tokyo, and the site of important spiritual, cultural, and community service activities. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, and anchors the National Landmark Little Tokyo Historic District to the West.
The Union Church was rehabilitated and transformed into the Union Center for the Arts in 1998, as a nonprofit arts complex. The Rehabilitation was carried out by the Old Union Church General Partnership, with the Little Tokyo Service Center serving as the Developer, and Visual Communications as General Partner. The project architect was Glenn Togawa, of Togawa & Smith, and the General Contractor was Mackone Development. Support for the rehabilitation was provided by the City of LA Seismic Bond Program, CRA/LA, CDD, the US Dep. of Commerce, EDA, the NEA, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, and George and Sakaye Aratani.
