Excerpt (in translation): … Participation in regular gymnastics lessons awakened the young medical student's interest in the functions of the human musculoskeletal system. He demonstrated the muscular tension on a horizontally attached gymnastics bar in long series of experiments and published the results in his 1819 dissertation “Exemplary Exploration of the Extension of the Upper Extremities”. After initial enthusiasm, the exercise, now called the “pull-up” for the sake of simplicity, was forgotten after 1848, along with its inventor.(Submitted on December 12, 2023.)
It wasn't until the 100th anniversary in 1919 that the pull-up was remembered again, just in time to replace the Olympic discipline of tug-of-war (last held in Antwerp in 1920) with a competition that was less intended for popular amusement.
In view of the basic research already carried out by Josef Klimm, there would definitely have been a chance for the pull-up. Since the German Reich was excluded from the Olympics up to and including 1924 as a result of the First World War, the IOC rejected the corresponding applications.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Josef Klimm's birthday on April 1, 1991, the city of Günzburg honored the great physician by placing a memorial plaque on his home.
