Regarding Edward Sorin. This prominent statue on Notre Dame's Main Quad is one of several monuments to Edward Sorin, the French-born priest who founded the University of Notre Dame as well as St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. A short distance from this statue is Sorin Hall, Notre Dame's oldest residence hall that serves today as a male dormitory; Sorin himself helped lay the cornerstone for the building in 1888. Sorin Court is a street behind Main Building, and Sorin's is a restaurant inside the on-campus hotel, Morris Inn. The Sorin Fellows and the Sorin Scholars are two school programs named in his honor. Elsewhere, in South Bend there are a Sorin Street and Sorin Park, and the campus of St. Edward's University has a Sorin Hall.

Excerpt: "The first residents to receive an education at Notre Dame were, in fact, orphans: The Brothers of Saint Joseph established the orphanage at Notre Dame to educate children beyond the ages of twelve and thirteen. In the early days, Notre Dame itself was known primarily as a vocational school, where training and apprenticeship were offered to the manual laborers of the area. From these humble beginnings, Father Sorin would see to it that Notre Dame became 'one of the most powerful means of doing good in this country.'”(Submitted on December 18, 2023, by Sean Flynn of Oak Park, Illinois.)
