Gerry was initially stationed at Mitchel Field Army Air Corps Base, NY with the 9th Bombardment Group (Medium). He then deployed to Rio Hato, Panama in 1980, as part of the 9th Bombardment Group (Heavy), HQ/Q Squadron, at Albrook Field, for the defense and support of the Canal Zone. His squadron moved to Waller Field, Trinidad in 1941 to support anti-submarine patrols. He returned to the states in 1943 and was posted at Florence Army Airfield, Florence SC. A Painter and Transportation Non-Commissioned Officer, he applied paint lettering, stenciling and insignias to military vehicles.
