Inscription.

(English translation:)
Dedicated to the apostle Santiago (Sant Iago > Jacob or James), the dedication of the church indicates the existing link between the town of Redondela and the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James, a path of pilgrimage).

In 1114, the famous bishop Xelmirez consecrated the Romanesque temple that preceded the current one, which shows that this church was the presentation of the Compostela miter. The current church, built in the first half of the 15th century, shows numerous additions in the form of chapels, such as those of San Sebastián and San Bieito, which are covered by beautiful cross vaults. The sacristy, which is rectangular in plan, is covered with a barrel vault. It shows the coat of arms of Redondela, with the shells on the reverse and the year 1714, the date of completion of the work.

The marker is somewhat oddly placed. Rather than near the front, or on the side of the church, as might be expected, the marker is on the side of a building in front of the church. It is easy to overlook.
elements of the building is its polygonal apse, covered by a cross vault divided into six parts that converge in a center starring a key. The two central buttresses that reinforce the exterior of the east facade of the apse, as well as the thrusts of the ribbed vault, date from 1641.

"Hespaña represented the Apostle Saint James in the likeness of the warriors of the Reconquest: mounted on a white horse and wielding a sword, terror of the Saracens, who had already been defeated and thrown to the ground, as was described by Alfonso the Wise, in his reference to the battle of Clavijo. This is the Saint James Matamoros (“killing Moors”), which is seen in the Spanish churches as a providential Patron, the Patron of Spain, as it has always been said: the only case of an Apostle of Christ, represented in a way that does not evangelize"
Alfonso Daniel Rodriguez
