Elgar Brothers, 10 High Street
Here, from 1863-79, he lived in a busy household above his father's music shop, surrounded by sheet music, scores, pianos and other instruments. With his brother Frank and friends he formed a wind quintet, writing music for it; accompanied singers and arranged music at Worcester Glee Club; led an amateur orchestra; absorbed the music of Worcester Cathedral; and contributed to the music of St George's Roman Catholic Church, both as organist and composer. This was his musical apprenticeship.
Frank Elgar took over Elgar Brothers when their father, W. H. Elgar, died in 1906, and the shop continued until Frank's death in 1928. The building disappeared in the mid 1960s.
