1. A Duel: Lachlan McIntosh v. Button Gwinnett
Born in Scotland, in 1725 Lachlan McIntosh was the son of the head of the McIntosh clan. John McIntosh arrived in Georgia with Oglethorpe's party. (Oglethorpe designed the city of Savannah). His education was somewhat neglected during the move from Scotland, but Oglethorpe gave him assistance in mathematics and McIntosh developed a good education through his own efforts.
Lachlan McIntosh was an American military and political leader during the American Revolution, and the early United States. He was tasked with the job of keeping our Commander in Chief safe from harm during the Encampment at Valley Forge. In a 1777 duel, he shot dead Button Gwinnett , following a dispute after a failed invasion of East Florida.
Button Gwinnett was also an English-born American political leader he was a representative of Georgia to the Continental Congress, and was the second signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was also, briefly, the provisional president of Georgia in 1777. Gwinnett County (now a major suburb of metropolitan Atlanta) was named for him.
