4. General McAuliffe statue
The monument to U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe sits on the Bastogne, Belgium, square that also bears his name. Outgunned and outnumbered, McAuliffe received a letter from German commanders on Dec. 22, 1944, requesting the surrender of all American troops under his command. McAuliffe responded with the now legendary retort: 'Nuts!' In the background is a city cafe/restaurant called La Nut's. MICHAEL ABRAMS/STARS AND STRIPES
