Campeche, January 26, 1848 - d. Madrid, Spain September 13, 1912) was a Mexican writer, historian, journalist, poet and politician, disciple of Ignacio Manuel Altamirano. He was a decided promoter of the foundation of the National University of Mexico, today the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is also known as the "Master of America" for the titles awarded to him by several universities in Latin America. He is considered one of the most influential personages of the modern history of Mexico, particularly for his long-term work towards the establishment of primary education in Mexico that is secular, public and free.
