Huntsville in Walker County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Sam Houston Whittling Site
General Sam Houston is credited with having sat on this corner to whittle and tell stories to groups of listeners who gathered around him while visiting a store operated at this location during the years the Houston family lived in Huntsville – 1847-1853, 1855-1858, and 1862-1863. General Houston often whittled small objects such as crosses, hearts, decorative buttons, bobbins, and miniature shuttles used in tatting and the making of lace. He also carved small baskets from peach seeds. Samples of these mementos, which he presented to friends, and his whittling knife are at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.
Erected 1993 by Citizens of Huntsville in Recognition of the Sam Houston Bicentennial.
