Samfundet S:t Erik initierade under 1930-talet moderniseringen av det sanitärt nedgångna kvarteret. Initiativet ledde till en mer optimistisk syn på möjligheten att bevara Gamla Stan. AB Stadsholmen bildades 1936 för förvaltningen. Efter uppmätning och dokumentation under ledning av arkitekten Albin Stark revs tretton av kvarterets gårdshus, i flera fall medeltida, medan gathusen upprustades. På den öppna inre gård som bildats anlades 1938 en funktionalistiskt präglad gemensam trädgård efter ritningar av trädgårdsarkitekterna Sven Hermelin och Inger Wedborn.

Samfundet S:t Erik initiated a scheme to modernize and preserve this historic neighbourhood in the 1930s. Many yard buildings were removed to let in light and air. The conservation scheme paved the way for successfully adapting Stockholm’s historic buildings to modern usage.
