Inscription. On this site in 1844 were rolled the first iron rails made in the United States. For this technological achievement, the Mount Savage Iron Works was awarded a silver medal by the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia

This plaque was dedicated in 1994 by the Western Maryland Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society
