Inscription. The Jitney Jungle grocery store chain was founded in 1919 by the McCarty and Holman families. In 1933, Jitney No. 14 held its grand opening in this Tudor Revival building designed by Emmett Hull. The building, called "The English Village," was enlarged in 1941 by architect N.W. Overstreet to include a drug store, beauty parlor, and dress shop. Author Eudora Welty was a regular customer. The current building, which is still a hub of local commerce, retains the original "No. 14" lettering above the entrances.

1. After buyout, store is now called the Corner Market.
The Roberts Company, based in Hattiesburg, MS, took over this McDade's Market (aka Froogel's Cost+ Foods), changing hands Jan. 28, 2020. McDade's Wine & Spirits was also acquired but the name remained the same.
