1. A Royal River View Marker
Inscription.
The 13th-century palace was built along the shore of the River Thames. Henry III and, later, his son Edward I would have been able to look out of their windows and see a fine river view. Between 1275 and 1285 Edward built the outer-curtain wall, and filled the space in between to make the Outer Ward, now known as Water Lane. To the west, he constructed the wharf for unloading ships.

Henry III had his own entrance to the palace. He could leave his barge and climb the stairs to his rooms. The Bloody Tower was the main watergate before Edward I built St Thomas's Tower.
