Bar Gernika. Basque Pub and Eatery. The clinking of glasses, the clang of silverware, good conversation and enjoyable times have long been a part of this corner. Food and drink are especially important to the Basques, drawing people together in this highly social culture. Constructed in 1912, this building first was home to Quong Chong Laundry. The laundry, as well as other Chinese businesses such as restaurants and markets, stood as markers of a culturally diverse neighborhood on Grove Street. Later, the small brick structure was converted into a restaurant, the "Boulevard Lunch", and then became "The Cub Tavern in 1948. More than 40 years later, the location took on a definite Basque flavor when the site was transformed to "Bar Gernika" in 1991. Gernika, Bizkaia, Spain, is Boise's sister city in Euskadi. And those who have traveled to Gernika report, yes, there was indeed a "Bar Boise" located there!
