Inscription.
E Clampus Vitus-What mystery and magic that name recalls! Mystery as to its meaning which is unknown; magic as its name conjures the Golden Days of California’s statehood. E Clampus Vitus was established in West Virginia in the 1840’s by Ephraim Bee and brought to the Mother Lode Gold Diggins of California in 1849 by Joe Zumwalt who after continuously moving on to new diggins he finally settled in Mokelumne Hill. Here in 1851 E Clampus Vitus was permanently established and has grown from its 19th century roots into its present form: an organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of the Trans-Mississippi West.
