The Vickers anti-aircraft gun was introduced to the British Army in 1938. It was considered the best anti-aircraft gun of its day, even outclassing its German counterpart, the 88mm Flak Gun.
The gun used a mobile carriage which enabled it to be moved rapidly, this was especially useful for following the troop movements in Europe after D-Day.
After the war, surplus stock of the 3.7 inch MK 1 Anti-Aircraft Gun was issued to the Coastal Defence Regiments for use against shipping.
bn This was perhaps due to the weapon's high rate of fire and the relative lack of armour on warships of this period.
In 1952 a 3.7 inch arrived at Heugh Gun Battery on a static mount fitted with Naval Sights. It was to be used for training. No emplacement was built for the gun and it was probably fixed to railway sleepers in front of the lighthouse.
