The 25 pounder is considered to have been one of the finest field artillery pieces used in the Second World War. Introduced in 1939, it remained in use by British Forces until 1972, and was still used for training purposes as late as the 1980s. Its last recorded use in combat was by the Iraqi Kurds in 2003.
The gun could be fired in the normal manner, directly at the target, but also at an angle to hit targets hidden by cover. The gun also came with a circular traversing platform. This allowed it to be set up rapidly and traverse easily onto targets making it very effective against tanks. This versatility as a field gun, howitzer and anti tank gun made the 25 pounder one of the most effective and important guns ever produced.
The limber standing beside the gun was towed between the gun and truck. It held 32 rounds with their fuses and a toolbox.
