Inscription.

Dr. Andre Le Guen
Excelentisimo Embajador Republica de Francia.
Municipalidad de Quetzaltenango.
Comite Centenario Nacimiento Poeta Osmundo Arriola.
Quetzaltenango 13 de septiembre de 1986.

English translation:
To this old tree the Quetzaltecan poet Osmundo Arriola sang:
"Towards the end of the street that leads to a church and its pious enclosure which collects the dead, there is a strong watchtower of high stature, courageous, solemn and of covered wounds, like the rude soldier of glorious epics that brandished his sword but eventually became sad and old."

Dr. Andre Le Guen, Most Excellent Ambassador of the Republic of France
Municipality of Quetzaltenango
Committee on the 100th Anniversary

The marker's reverse can be seen here near the trunk of the poet's tree. Locals estimate that the cypress was around 200 years old before being cut down some time in the 1990s. The Calvary Catholic Church (Iglesia del Calvario), mentioned in the marker text, can be seen to the left in the background. The cemetery is towards the right in the background.
