Regarding Rancho La Brea Adobe. La Casa de Rancho La Brea, or Gilmore Adobe, was built in 1852 by James Thompson, as a tenant house on Antonio Jose Rocha's Rancho La Brea. When A.F. Gilmore acquired the Adobe, it was a four-room structure with a dirt floor and flat roof. As his dairy business grew, he added to the original structure to accomodate the growing need for worker housing. He added three rooms, wooden floors, and a shingled hip roof, giving the Adobe its present U-shaped form. When he married in 1882, the Adobe became the home for his growing family. His son E.B. Gilmore was born there in 1887. In 1924, E.B. made the Adobe his home, where he raised two daughters with his wife, Louise. His third wife, Marie, lived in the Adobe until her death in 1976. In 1977, the Gilmore Adobe became the office of the A.F. Gilmore Company. In 1992, E.B's grandson, Hank Hilty, became the president of A.F.Gilmore Company, with his new office in the original Gilmore Adobe.
