1. St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Marker
Inscription. St. John the Evangelist Parish was established in 1837 and was the first Catholic parish in Marion County. The present church (1867-71) was designed by Diedrich A. Bohlen following French Gothic precedents. The spires, added in 1893, were designed by his son Oscar D. Bohlen. From 1878-1907, this church served as pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Vincennes, renamed the Diocese of Indianapolis in 1898.
