Regarding First Federal Court and Postoffice. The architectural work of Wright Butler is of major importance to the architectural heritage and character of Cumberland. A son of one of the city's foremost furniture manufacturers, H. Kennedy Butler, the younger Butler is believed to have studied architecture at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore for about three years before opening an office in Cumberland in 1891. His first major commission was the imposing Romanesque Revival Allegany County Courthouse on Prospect Square in the Washington Street area.
