It is unclear as to what battle the marker is commemorating. Several sources record battles occurring here on January 27, 1777, September 27, 1778 and June 1, 1779. Yet another account tells of a skirmish between troops of Washington's Army and those of Gen. Charles Cornwallis during the retreat across New Jersey. While the date of this skirmish is not mentioned, it would have been in late 1776, and not in September 1777.

An article about this marker, and the battle it commemorates appeared in The Belleville Times of Sept. 27, 2007. The article is reproduced at Old Belleville Blog.
