Inscription. Located in Princess Anne, Somerset County, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore celebrates a rich African-American history. This historically black, land-granted doctoral degree granting institution was founded on September 13, 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy by the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It opened with nine students and one professor in the Olney building, but added twenty-eight students by the end of that year. It operated under different names until 1970 when it was named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as part of the University of Maryland System.

The 766-acre campus was twice ranked as the second most beautiful campus in the U.S. by the National Professional Grounds Management Society. By 2005, there were over 3,500 students enrolled from the U.S. and 73 countries worldwide. To meet the needs of the 21st Century, 46 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are offered within the Schools of the Arts and Professions, Agricultural and Natural Sciences, Business and Technology, the Health Professions, and Graduate Studies
