Shark River Salt Works
Shark River Salt Works
On this date some 150 men, composed of British Highlanders and loyalists, landed south of Shark River and completely destroyed the salt-works which produced this commodity essential to the well-being of the American soldiers. They were driven off by some fifteen Monmouth Militia, whom they thought to be scouts for a larger group, in such a panic that they swamped some of the longboats used to ferry them to the three British vessels lying offshore.
The salt was produced by boiling the sea-water in large flat pans over wood fires until only the salt was left.
Dedicated July 4, 1976, on the 200th anniversary of our independence from Great Britian.
Erected 1976 by Belmar Bicentennial Committee.
