Inscription.
Built by J. Shipley then twice auctioned. In 1879 sold to the Eckert's who served such popular food that the hotel was later enlarged. The public was allowed to take a shortcut through the hotel which led them to the upper street and court house. Eckert knew they'd be enticed by the delicious aromas to dine there! Later converted to apartments.

The two buildings which constitute the Howard House are referred to as the "Old Building" and "The New Building." They are set into the north side of Main Street's steep granite slope so that the third floor on the south elevation becomes the ground floor on the north... - MSA statement of significance.

The marker is just to the right of the hotel entrance (on the right-hand building, obscured by the porch shadow).
