Inscription.
A Blacksmith Shop has been a feature of the West Orange laboratory complex since it was built in 1887. The first shop was located in the back of Building 4. It moved to an unknown location in 1900 and burned down in 1911. The current Blacksmith Shop, built in 1911, was enlarged to its present size by 1919.

According to a former Edison assistant, the shop was used for forging any pattern of metal needed in the Laboratory Machine Shop, especially parts for repair of the machines themselves.

Activities in the shop stopped sometime between 1927 and 1931.
