Inscription. From 1810 to 1888, the area around the State Capitol was an extensive U.S. Army arsenal and supply depot. Today, the last remaining arsenal is a museum that features replicas of powder-filled casks, as well as interpretive information about 19th century Baton Rouge. A set of instructions on display warns soldiers to remove boots upon entry and never to roll casks: two acts believed to trigger accidental explosion. The 1838 building could hold 3,000 barrels of gun powder and has walls four feet thick.
