Leendert Schijveschuurder
Amsterdam, 2 december 1917 - onbekend, 6 maart 1941

"Precisely because I have had a child, I have to fight for a good future," was Leendert (Leen) Schijveschuurder's response when friends warned him that he was in danger. He was

a printer by profession and, as a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN), was involved in the organization of the February strike. The German occupiers intervened harshly. Yet another strike was planned for March 6. Schijveschuurder was arrested while posting strike calls. He was the first Dutch-born resistance fighter to be executed during the Second World War. After a summary trial procedure, he stood before a German firing squad a day later. His young son, who was in hiding, survived the war. He never found a photo of his father.

Excerpt (in translation): Schijveschuurder was a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN) and a printer by profession. On February 25, 1941, a strike broke out in Amsterdam and the surrounding area as a protest against the persecution of Jews. Two days later the February strike was bloodily suppressed by the Germans. The CPN, which had played an important role in the strike, then called for a second strike on March 6, 1941. Schijveschuurder was caught posting calls for that strike on March 5. He was sentenced to death in a summary trial. On March 6 he was shot. Only afterwards was his
