Regarding Better Homes & Gardens' Highest Community Honor. From information provided by Marci Penner in The Kansas Guidebook for explorers (2005), Utility Park was built during the Great Depression by city utility customers who could not pay their utility bills. Their work garnered national attention and recognition by Better Homes & Gardens. The zoo was added after World War II.
