Inscription.
This house was the home of the Italian liberator, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who fled to America after the collapse of the republic in Italy in 1849. He came to Staten Island in 1850 and lived here with his friend, Antonio Meucci, who worked on the development of the telephone. They eked out a living making candles in the back yard. In 1860, Garibaldi, with the “One Thousand,” freed Sicily and southern Italy, and lived to see Italy unified. the Order of the Sons of Italy in America, bought the house in 1956 for a memorial museum.
