Inscription.

Hotelier John R. McCall engaged master builder Thomas M. Barr to build this hotel in response to the busy trade along the Susquehanna and Waterford Pike. It operated under a number of proprietors through the years, including Robert R. Means, John McCracken, and Robert McKinley. In 1864, at the height of the Civil War, owner McCracken changed the name to the Union Hotel. The addition on the right was built in 1907 by contractor John H. Carr, featuring a reading room on the first story and guest rooms above. The original section was built with a lavish wood balcony along the second story.
