South Dakota State Historical Society Historical Markers

Begun in 1950 when the SDSHS was not an official part of state government, early markers were funded by society members often in cooperation with interested groups, the SD DOT through its Publicity Division (forerunner of the Department of Tourism), and many local historical societies and civic groups who raised money to purchase markers for their communities. The marker program, now numbering in the hundreds, continues to be primarily funded through private donations with very limited state funding.
