The Brigade moving from the crest in the woods northeast of this position, held this line until after 4 p.m., being heavily engaged with Carlin's and Heg's Brigades, supported by Wilder's Brigade of mounted infantry. About 3:30 p.m. Harker's Brigade followed by Buell's arrived from Lee and Gordon's Mill, and reenforced the Union line. Harker passed north, and the rest of the Union line was driven across the fields west of Viniard's. Benning occupying the ground around the Viniard house with his advance in the ravine. The Union forces rallied and re-occupied this ground, forcing Benning to withdraw into the forest in his rear at sunset.
