1. Old Auburn Marker

Inscription. On May 11, 1863, two division of the XV Corps camped here. Water was scarce, and Sherman reported to Grant that he was "short of provisions and ammunition" while captured mail indicated "many million rations in Vicksburg." The next morning, Grant rode from Cayuga and joined Sherman for the move toward the railroad. The XIII Corps left Fivemile Creek, one and a half miles southwest, at 5:30 a.m., following the XV Corps. McPherson's men from the XVII Corps left the Roach Farm, six miles southeast, and marched toward Raymond.
