—————————
About half an hour after Croxton's Brigade had engaged the enemy near Jay's Mill Van Derveer's Brigade deployed arrived on this ground and swinging toward the southeast became engaged with Forrest's Cavalry dismounted, soon re-enforced by Ector's infantry brigade of Walker's Division. The Brigade held its ground and repulsed all attacks. Soon after 11 a.m. King's Brigade of Baird's Division was driven over Van Derveer's lines by Liddell's Division, and its Battery (H, 5th U.S. Artillery) was captured. The 9th Ohio, supported by the 17th Ohio of Connell's Brigade, charged from the right of Van Derveer's line, recapturing the regular battery.
