Howard Avenue is modern, and not representing any particular feature. Barlow Knoll, the key terrain feature anchoring the Union lines in this sector of the battlefield, is seen to the distant right.

The regiment held a position here, anchored on the Carlisle Road (on the right), facing north. Elements of the regiment were posted forward along the road, roughly 300 yards from the monument location.

Right at 300 yards due north of the monument location is a small marker indicating the advance position. It simple states, 157th N.Y. Infantry July 1, 1863.
