Espinosa-Sanchez House. First Spanish Colonial Period, Built 1702-1756. One of the few Spanish Colonial buildings remaining in St. Augustine and among a smaller group from the First Spanish Period, this structure suffered two fires and underwent many major alterations. The first documented property owner, and possible builder, Diego de Espinosa was of the mercantile-planter class which accounts for the size and potential commercial use of the building. Spanish site plan characteristics of a street-front orientation and building form with a main block-and-wing extension designed with an arcaded loggia are original. The 1965 building restoration was conducted with analysis of the building fabric and archeological evidence to understand the original building form and opening patterns.
