Bartow was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run, becoming the first brigade commander in the Confederate States Army to die in combat.

Francis S. Bartow (1816-1861). Colonel of the 8th Regiment Georgia volunteers, was killed at the Battle of Manassas on July 21st, 1861. The bust was moved from its original location in Chippewa Square to make room for the Oglethorpe Monument (Feb. 1910). The bust was installed by the Bartow, McLaws Monument Association, a creation of the Confederate Veterans Association of Savannah. IAS files contain related a typed report which provides biographical information on Francis S. Bartow and a history of the creation of the monument to Bartow. For related information see Dorothy H. Stewart's "The Monuments and Fountains of Savannah," Savannah: Savannah Park and Tree Department, 1993.
