Regarding White Homestead. The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center is located in the 1830 Hugh White Homestead. In 1964, this Greek Revival mansion was scheduled for demolition. However, a group of citizens rallied to save the house and move it from Saratoga Avenue to its present location at 2 Museum Lane overlooking the Mohawk River and the old Champlain Canal in Waterford, New York.
Hugh White
Hugh White was a Representative to the U.S. Congress from New York. He was born in Whitestown, Oneida County, N.Y., on December 25, 1798 where he attended the common schools. He went on to graduate from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1823. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar, but he did not practice law. Instead he joined his brother in the manufacturing of ”Water Lime Cement” at the Chittenango cement works in 1825 and afterwards at Rondout. He was active in the building of the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad, and then moved to Cohoes, N.Y. in 1830 He was greatly

2. White Homestead with Marker
The White Homestead is now The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center
In 1845 Hugh White was elected to Congress, representing the Saratoga, New York area as a Whig. He was re-elected twice, serving until 1851, serving in theTwenty-ninth, Thirtieth, and Thirty-first Congresses (March 4, 1845 - March 3, 1851); where he was chairman of the Committee on Agriculture (in the Thirtieth Congress). After his public service he resumed his business activities. At his death in Waterford, N.Y. on October 6, 1870, White was President of the Saratoga County National Bank, Waterford, NY and a Trustee of the Waterford Presbyterian Church. He is interred in the Albany Rural Cemetery.
