Regarding U☆S 1st Battalion 13th U.S. Infantry. This unit was attached to Colonel Giles A. Smith's 1st Brigade, of Major General Francis P. Blair's 2d Division, Major General's William T. Sherman's and Frederick Steele's XV Army Corps, and commanded by Major Daniel Chase, Captain Edward C. Washington (mortally wounded 19 May 1863), Captain Charles Ewing, and Captain Charles C. Smith. During the assault of 19 May 1863, Captain Washington and Lt. Justus A. Boles were mortally wounded and the unit suffered as a whole 21 killed and 49 wounded.
