El Teatro Degollado
Patrimonio Cultural

the project in the year of 1855 in change of the illustrious architect Jacobo Gálvez. Due to the political conflicts and the wars of the period, the construction was interrupted several times. On September 1866, not done yet the first inauguration is made with the opera “Lucia de Lamermoore” acting as soprano the illustrious Mexican Angela Peralta, known in Europe as the “Mexican Nightingale”. On 1877, the work starts again and it is between 1880 and 1893 on which the towers are concluded. It is worth mentioning that until 1954 it is when the tympanum of the floor is installed. The allegories allusive to “Apollo and the Nine Muses” were of the artist Roberto Montenegro dedicated in 1954 and another with the same theme was substituted in 1964 elaborated in white marble by Benito Castaneda. A curious fact is that it has been one of the few theaters to be inaugurated five times.
