Claessen embodied the expert knowledge, the enthusiasm and the organizing ability required to build up a radiological institution from the very start. At the request of the Medical Faculty of the University of Iceland, the necessary means were procured in 1913, and under Claessen's leadership The University Roentgen Institute was established in 1914 in three small rooms with a roentgen unit from Siemens & Halske, for roentgenography, fluoroscopy as well as minor roentgen treatment.
