Su sed de conocimiento lo lleva a Europa donde fortalece sus ideales liberales y perfila nuestro Independencia Nacional. Al retornar ingresa en el servicio obligatorio de la Guardia Nacional del Ejército Haitiano de ocupación, ascendiendo hasta el grado de Coronel. Fundó tres movimientos revolucionarios: LA TRINITARIA, LA FILANTROPICA Y LA DRAMATICA, con los que logró, a fuerza de grandes sacrificios y firme voluntad, sembrar en nuestro pueblo el amor por la libertad y el espíritu de lucha que hicieron nacer la Repúbilca (sic, República) Dominicana el 27 de Febrero de 1844. The Trinitarian Oath
In the name of the Most Holy, August and Indivisible Trinity of God Omnipotent: I swear and promise, on my honor and conscience, in the hands of our President Juan Pablo Duarte, to cooperate with my person, life and property and to struggle for the definitive separation of the Haitian Government and to implement a republic, free and sovereign and independent of all foreign domination, which will be called the Dominican Republic, which will have its tricolor flag of red and blue squares, with a white cross; the Republic will establish its corresponding coat of arms.
