Inscription.
Lock 38 is one of the few restored, working locks along the historic Ohio and Erie Canal. Locks are like elevators – they raise and lower boats between levels. State engineers designed 44 locks to deal with a 395 foot rise in elevation from Cleveland to Akron.
Heavy wooden gates enclose the boat-sized stone chamber. Lock operators added water to the chamber to raise a boat headed upstream. They drained out water to lower a boat headed downstream.
