Navy set up a 5,000 person housing development in 1940 on 68 acres between Warwick Road and James River. The first tenants moved into 100 prefab buildings in the fall of 1941. Ferguson Park, which honored Shipyard President Homer L. Ferguson (1873-1953), was vacated and razed beginning Sept. 1, 1965. Nine streets bore names of Newport News-built warships.
